I could see that lots of people in your reading group were a little confused about the shell. If you don't already know about shells and shelling in the context of wars, you would think it odd for the soldier to get hit by a shell. I'm glad that you stopped and questioned this - this shows that you are thinking about your reading and working are to make sense while you are reading. This was a good experience for you, and I'm sure you will remember to look for, an think about, other meanings for words when you are reading in future, too.
